The Arabian Desert is vast and harsh, though it can be beautiful. Dunes of iron oxide-coated sand can stand nearly 800 feet tall, giving them orange, purple, and red hues.
About 90 miles north of Madinah, there’s a flat stretch of basalt created from lava. Natural springs flow out of the rock to form a rare oasis.
This is Khaibar.
It is a place of dates and grain.
Khattab ibn Nufayl was a ruthless man from the tribe of Banu Makhzum. Famed for his intellect, an arbiter for his tribe. A merchant. The father of the Caliph Umar (RA).
Through his father’s relentless emphasis on hard work and his family’s wealth, the future Caliph would acquire a date orchard in the precious land of Khaybar.
Umar sought the Rasul’s (SAW) counsel on how he might make use of these valuable lands. That exchange was preserved for us by the Caliph’s son, beginning with Umar’s question:
“O Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) I got some land in Khaibar better than which I have never had, what do you suggest that I do with it?” The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “If you like you can give the land as endowment and give its fruits in charity.” So `Umar gave it in charity as an endowment on the condition that would not be sold nor given to anybody as a present and not to be inherited, but its yield would be given in charity to the poor people, to the Kith and kin, for freeing slaves, for Allah’s Cause, to the travelers and guests; and that there would be no harm if the guardian of the endowment ate from it according to his need with good intention, and fed others without storing it for the future.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, 2772)
There is no mistaking the message of this hadith.
We can donate something that itself creates even more good.
And this idea, this simple and powerful sunnah later spread and sustained Islamic civilization.
Now, imagine.
Imagine the good you could do if you had that entire orchard of Khaibar, folded it up in your pocket, and gave pieces of it to whichever causes you want, automatically, while seeing the difference you are making.
Today, we have the technology to do it.
From our smartphones.
And this is why we are building Afterfund.co.
Afterfund.co continuously multiplies your sadaqah by investing in a halal fund that grows and automatically distributes profits each year to causes you care about.
